NEW NETWORK OF INDEPENDENT NURSING HOMES

"Seven owners of nursing homes in Massachusetts yesterday said they have formed a new company, called The Aurum Network, to jointly market and contract business" while remaining independent. The owners include the Pointe Group (Eastpointe), Welch Healthcare and Retirement (Colonial, John Scott), and Salter Healthcare Group (Winchester, Aberjona). These facilities seem to be taking a creative approach to the difficulty independent facilities have in competing with the large chains in, for example, negotiating contracts with insurers. Also for this reason Aurum seeks to offer services in addition to nursing home care, including assisted living, home health care and hospice care in an attempt to cover the continuum of care. It will be interesting to watch this new model to see how it develops and fares in this business climate.
