Food MORE FOOD PROGRAMS

Many times needy people do not qualify for Food Stamps, or they find that the benefits they receive are not enough to feed their families. The following are descriptions compiled by Project Bread of food programs throughout the state of Massachusetts that help feed thousands of people.

Families

Serve New England, Inc. (Formerly Share) (888-742-7363)
Low-cost food for those willing to give two hours per month of voluntary community service.

Farmers’ Markets/State Department of Agriculture (617-727-300, x175 for locations)
Fresh, lower priced produce July through November.

Emergency Food

Families with Children

Special Supplemental Food Program for Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) (800-WIC-1007)
For low and moderate income pregnant or breast-feeding women, and children under age 5 who are at nutritional risk.

Summer Food Service Program (888-882-2003)
For children 18 years or younger during the summer months. Free nutritious breakfast, lunch or snacks at local community sites.

Expanded Food and Nutrition Education Program-UMass Cooperative Extension (800-622-3637)
Free nutrition education for low-income families with young children.


Families with Elders

Senior Meals: Congregate Meals and Meals on Wheels (800-882-2003)
Provides nutritious meals to all seniors 60 years and older regardless of income for a small fee or a donation.
