SSI UPDATE

According to the Mass Immigrant & Refugee Advocacy Coalition, in early October SSI benefits were restored to all immigrants who were receiving SSI prior to the Welfare Reform Law in 1996. The Balance Budget Agreement of 1997 had restored benefits to some Qualified immigrants, but a group of immigrants considered "not qualified" were ineligible. With this extension all elderly and disabled immigrants who had been receiving benefits prior to August 22, 1996, are eligible once again to get SSI benefits.
