THE NEW MASSACHUSETTS PHARMACY INSURANCE PROGRAM
A new Massachusetts pharmacy insurance program is expected to be available starting April 1, 2001. This as yet unnamed
program is open to those 65 and over or the disabled under 65 years of age.
Details about the new insurance program are still being designed. There will be premiums, deductibles and co-pays based
on a sliding fee. It is expected that the premiums will range from $25-82, which will be paid by the state for those with
an individual income of $15,000 or less. Those currently enrolled in Massachusetts' "The Pharmacy Program" will be
automatically eligible and likely will have their premiums covered. The benefit is to be unlimited, but there may be a
limited formulary.
The catastrophic pharmacy cost coverage in effect this year ("The Pharmacy Program Plus") that was to sunset 12/31/00
has been extended until 3/31/01 to cover the gap until the new insurance program is in effect. (See the Resource Wall
on FH2 for applications for the Pharmacy Program and the Pharmacy Program Plus, or visit
our website for more
information, or contact the CRC).
The MGH Community News will report more information about the new insurance program as it becomes available.
