BEACON HILL VILLAGE: A NEW VIRTUAL COMMUNITY
Beacon Hill Village is a “virtual retirement community” that has been in operation for about 2 ½ years. Created by elder residents of Beacon Hill who were faced with the possibility of leaving their neighborhood in order to obtain the services of a retirement community, Beacon Hill Village (BHV) aims to help members remain in their own homes for as long as possible. It is a non-profit membership organization that offers its members access to information services, household services, transportation, meals and groceries, and social opportunities. BHV has two social workers on staff that can coordinate with MGH to plan for discharge of patients. Additionally, anything from assisted living in one’s home to geriatric case management can be provided.
Eligibility:
In order to be eligible for membership, persons must be 50 years of age or older and live on Beacon Hill and in its adjacent neighborhoods - Back Bay and the West End, and in some areas of the South End and the North End.
Membership Fees:
Membership price is $500 for an individual and $750 for a family, good for one year from the month that it is purchased. Services such as geriatric care management (including health screenings and wellness clinics), information and referral, grocery shopping, and exercise are included in this fee. Additional services, such as home repair, household cleaning, and errands can be provided at discounted prices. Additionally, BHV offers a Membership Plus option for low-income seniors. Individuals with income of $45,000 or under, or couples with income of $50,000 and under are eligible to join at a reduced membership rate and receive credits to use towards extra programs and services offered. Membership Plus price is $100 for an individual and $150 for a family.
