The Department of Homeland Security recently announced the renewal of Temporary Protected Status Extension (TPS) for El Salvador, Honduras, and Nicaragua. This is the fifth time that citizens from El Salvador and the seventh time that citizens of Honduras and Nicaragua are granted TPS for an additional 12 months.
Under TPS, immigrants from these three countries are authorized to live and work in the United States temporarily. The extension of TPS will cover approximately 225,000 Salvadorans, 75,000 Hondurans, and 4,000 Nicaraguans across the nation.
“TPS serves a critical role in the lives of families impacted by natural, economic and political disaster,” said Ali Noorani, executive director of the Massachusetts Immigrant and Refugee Advocacy Coalition. “However, families with TPS status who have raised their children in Massachusetts communities, believe their home is America (and) they want the opportunity to become U.S. Citizens.”
