Albert Tecci from Kennedy Center Mobility Services, explained the MBTA’s Travel Training Program at the May CRC Info Session.
The MBTA Travel Training program is designed to enable those who are considered disabled and are approved for THE RIDE to use regular public transportation. Typical clients might include those with cognitive disabilities and those with visual impairments – anyone for whom teaching would make the difference in being able to use regular MBTA services instead of THE RIDE.
Benefits to the consumer include more control and flexibility, more interaction with the community and free T-Passes for life. The Program covers the geographic area served by the commuter rail.
Unfortunately, however, the contract between the MBTA and The Kennedy Center for the Travel Training Program will be dissolved at the end of June 2006, ending the program. Mr. Tecci has offered to expedite the training of any clients referred from MGH Social Service before the program ceases. However, to qualify for the program, any clients must already be registered with the RIDE. An alternative resource is the Easter Seals Project ACTION program which also offers travel training (800) 244-2756.
Referral forms (click here) should be completed and sent to Mr. Tecci at The Kennedy Center. Once approved, he will meet the client at home. During the intake, he learns the client’s preferences and limitations, then creates a route based on this information. When determining the best route, Mr. Tecci is mindful of potential problems such as torn up sidewalks, large crowds, and confusing transfers. During the training, Mr. Tecci works with the client until it is clear she/he knows the route well enough to travel alone. If necessary, he will shadow the client to ensure their ability to navigate the process.
The deadline for new referrals to the MBTA Travel Training Program is Friday, June 16.
