IMMIGRANT DETENTION LEGISLATION

The Detainee Basic Medical Care Act has been introduced in both the House and Senate (HR 5950 and S 3005). It would require the Department of Homeland Security to implement procedures that provide better care to detainees as well as improve oversight of the medical care system.  There is a good chance it could pass this year.  (see summary here)
Senators Lieberman, Brownback, Kennedy, and Hagel introduced the Secure and Safe Detention and Asylum Act (S. 3114). It focuses on conditions of detention, parole and alternatives to detention (see summary here). If you have any questions about these pieces of legislation and/or how to get more involved, please contact Eva Millona at 617-350-5480 x211.
