Coalition for the Homeless – Furniture Bank

The Social Services Department recently became official members of the Coalition for the Homeless Furniture Bank, which allows MGH social workers to directly make referrals for clients.

The Coalition’s Furniture Bank assists households that are transitioning from shelter into an apartment, in a doubled-up situation after losing their housing, or individuals who are referred by DSS, DTA, and emergency shelter or are homeless due to domestic violence. In the CRC’s experience, the Coalition has also been willing to assist other households who are in need and have the support of a social worker. All furniture is donated and in very good condition- the Coalition only accepts and offers items that they would have in their own homes.

Social workers should fill out the referral form. The client must call the furniture bank two days after submitting the application to schedule an appointment (781-595-7570 x 11). The Coalition does not provide delivery services, and therefore it is key that clients have transportation coordinated prior to accepting an appointment with the Furniture Bank. The Coalition has a strict policy regarding attendance and will not reschedule missed appointments. Additionally, households are only eligible to receive assistance once.

Tip : The CRC has found the non-profit agency Solutions at Work to be a helpful resource for low-cost moving services.
