In early April Red Sox designated hitter David Ortiz announced the creation of ‘ Papi Cares 2009’, a ticket program that will provide trips to Fenway Park for families facing difficult financial circumstances. A different family will be selected to attend each of the 81 regular season Red Sox home games this season, the team said in a press release. “These are tough times and it is important that we all step up and find ways to help each other,” said Ortiz. “Baseball is a family game and the ‘Papi Cares’ program will give special families an opportunity to spend time together at the ballpark.”

Each family will receive four right field box tickets purchased by Ortiz and a $50 food voucher.

The ‘Papi Cares 2009’ families will be selected from various community groups and non-profit organizations throughout New England.

Phil Derick, Fenway Ambassador, clarified the application process- “ (a)ll we ask from families who would like to be considered is that you send us an email describing the financial hardships your family is under and why you think this experience would be particularly beneficial for your family. Please send your request (including your mailing address) to fanfeedback@redsox.com.”

Inquiries can be sent to the Red Sox via at that e-mail address, or by regular mail to ‘Papi Cares 2009’ c/o Boston Red Sox, 4 Yawkey Way, Boston, MA 02215.
