VA Boston Healthcare System Wheelchair Clinics

VA primary care providers can refer patients to one of the VA Boston “Wheelchair Clinics” available at the Brockton, Jamaica Plain, and West Roxbury VA campuses.

There are two types of wheelchair seating and mobility clinics offered at VA Boston: one for  spinal cord injury and disease patients and the other for general medical patients. Clinic staff work to provide the most appropriate custom seating system to meet the needs of individuals with advanced seating requirements. Correct selection of a mobility system and seating can maximize functional independence, reduce the risk of deformities, and prevent skin breakdown.  

The clinic's interdisciplinary team includes:

• a doctor
• a physical therapist
• an occupational therapist
• a prosthetics representative
• a wheelchair technician, and
• the patient and family/caregivers.

Services:

The wheelchair clinic team will assess the patient's need for individualized custom seating, positioning and mobility. This might include configuring, purchasing, fitting and/or repair of

• lightweight manual wheelchairs
• power-assist wheelchairs
• power wheelchairs
• sports chairs

Individual services also may include

• pressure mapping
• custom molded seating for backs and cushions
• seating posture evaluation

After delivery, clinic staff will continue to work with the patient to provide long term support and service.  This may include home visits if necessary.
