New Housing Opportunity for Adults with Developmental Disabilities
Jewish Family & Children’s Services (JF&CS) through a collaborative partnership between the Norwood Housing Authority (NHA) and Jack Roche, a local builder, will provide eight units of housing at 449 Washington Street in Norwood for seven adults with developmental disabilities or related conditions. The units will be subsidized through the NHA and JF&CS will provide supported living services seven days per week for a pre-determined number of hours/week.
According to their website, the proposed property at 449 Washington Street is optimally situated for residents to be actively involved in the Norwood community. Residents will have easy access to public transportation with a bus stop immediately outside of the home and the commuter rail less than half a mile away. Sites for many work and volunteer activities are within walking distance, as are shopping, recreational, and community activities.
Applicants to this program will need to be 21 years or older, income eligible, and have a developmental disability or related condition. The model of service will include a live-in JF&CS staff person, who will have his/her own apartment on the top floor of the house. One component of this person's duties will be to provide overnight and emergency coverage to ensure the safety of the adult residents in the house. Additional staff hours will provide supervision and training in activities of daily living including laundry, housekeeping, and food preparation. Transportation to local supermarkets and assistance with grocery shopping will be provided on a weekly basis. The specific plan of service will be developed based on the actual needs of each individual.
