MassHealth Pharmacy Co-Pay Revisions

Effective July 1, 2010, MassHealth revised their pharmacy copayments. They have eliminated a category that charged $2 for certain generic drugs and placed these drugs in the “brand name drugs” category with a $3 co-pay.

The new pharmacy copayments are

• $1 for generic and over-the-counter drugs treating diabetes, hypertension and high cholesterol (no change from current amount); and
• $3 for each prescription and refill for all other generic, brand-name, and over-the-counter drugs covered by MassHealth.

These regulations were promulgated as an emergency, and are effective July 1, 2010.

The previous amounts were:

• $1 for generic drugs treating diabetes, hypertension and high cholesterol.
• $2 for generic drugs for all other conditions.
• $3 for brand name drugs.
