Program Highlight:
The Family Support Assessment Clinic
At Boston Medical Center
The family Support Assessment Clinic at Boston Medical Center, part of the Good Grief program, offers parental guidance in helping a child facing a difficult time because:
- of a difficult diagnosis for him or his family member
- his or her choices are limited due to her own illness or disorder and she or he feels different
- a loved one has died or will die soon
- a loved one has left, parents have separated, or the child needs to move
- he or she feels all alone due to what’s happening in the family.
Parents meet with a pediatrician and mental health clinician who offer developmental information, strategies, and coping skills. They help parents to
- more fully understand what the stressful life event means to the child
- appreciate the differences that age and stage makes to the child’s ability to understand
- “find the words” to explain, engage with and teach the child
- access different help when it’s required

The child’s pediatrician should call The Family Support Assessment Clinic at Boston Medical Center , 617-414-4235 and ask for Sarah Barton. Referrals must come from the patient’s pediatrician, but the pediatrician does not need to practice at Children’s hospital.
