Paternal Depression Liked to
Negative Parenting Behaviors
Depressed fathers of 1-year-olds are more likely to spank and less likely to read to their children than fathers who are not depressed, a new study shows (April issue of Pediatrics published online March 14).
The study notes that "Similar to studies on maternal depression, paternal depression has been associated with decreased sensitivity or warmth in parenting, as well as increased conflict, hostility, and rejection." The poorer parenting behaviors of depressed fathers have been associated with lower psychosocial function in their children.
