“Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” Repealed
As of 9/20/11 revised Defense Department regulations took effect to reflect the new law that now allows gay men and lesbians to serve openly in the military, repealing the old policy informally known as “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell”. The military has begun accepting applications from openly gay recruits.
The lifting of the ban also will mean a halt to all pending investigations, discharges, and other administrative proceedings that were begun under the “don’t ask, don’t tell’’ law.
There will be no immediate changes to eligibility standards for military benefits because the federal “Defense of Marriage Act” bans them from receiving full benefits.
