AFFORDABLE HEALTH INSURANCE FOR EMPLOYEES OF SMALL BUSINESSES
Affordable health insurance is now available to employees of small businesses. The Insurance Partnership (IP), a program offered by the Division of Medical Assistance, not only helps small businesses pay for the health insurance they provide to their employees, but also assists employees in paying for their share of insurance premiums.
This program is not new, it is phase three in the IP's effort to expand the range of people who may be eligible for affordable insurance. Phase two was open only to employers who offered certain insurers who had contracted with MassHealth. Offering insurance to the employees of small businesses benefits both employee and employer. The goal is for employees to be healthier, require less sick leave and increase productivity levels. In addition, employers who offer health insurance are more attractive to current and prospective employees.
The Insurance Partnership will pay for most of an eligible employee's insurance costs. In most cases, the employee's monthly cost will be only $25/adult, $50/couple, and/or $10/child. Employees are eligible to join the IP if they are Massachusetts residents between the ages of 19 and 64, have a family income that meets the employee income standards (200% Federal Poverty Level. or below; see chart), and if they are self-employed or work for a business that meets the Insurance Partnership's qualifications. A small business is eligible to join the IP if it employs 50 or fewer full-time workers, offers comprehensive health insurance to its employees, and contributes at least 50% of the cost of the insurance purchased. Employees already receiving MassHealth benefits are eligible for additional assistance from the Insurance Partnership.
