Holiday Gifts

Globe Santa

The 2018 application deadline has passed. See our gifts page for additional programs.

Letters need to be counter-signed by designated staff: Elizabeth Thompson (x6-2614) or Mary Barber (x3-2166).

The Boston Globe provides gifts for children who come from needy families in the Greater Boston area, who would otherwise not be able to afford holiday gifts.

Below are the procedures and requirements:

      • The family (a legal guardian) needs to write their own letter stating their situation/need and the names, ages and genders of all children 12 years and under.
        • The letter should also contain their address including apartment number, zip code and telephone number.
        • The social worker should be able to verify the information contained in the letter; so these should be families that you either have worked with and/or are currently working with.
        • Make sure age/gender of each child is clearly and legibly written on the letter. If not, re-write it next to your signature.
        • Verify contact information about the family such as address, phone numbers and email, specifically a means to contact family for inquiries that require immediate attention. Make sure this information is clearly and legibly written on the letter. If not, please re-write it.
      • Please inform your patients that the postal service may require photo identification (driver's license, passport, or Registry of Motor Vehicle issued ID card) of the recipient either at the home (or at the post office if person is not home) in order to deliver the gifts.
      • If family is involved with the Department of Children and Families (DCF), please inform the family that the Globe asks that these requests come through a DCF worker assigned to the family.
      • If family has Mass Health or is receiving TAFDC, please double check with the family member to make sure that a request hasn't already been sent via Mass Health or TAFDC mailing. According to Globe Santa personnel, this helps prevent duplication of requests, which are costly and time-consuming for them to track.
      • If the family receives aid from the Department of Transitional Assistance (DTA/Welfare) and is requesting Globe Santa holiday gift assistance through them, please do not duplicate a gift request for the family. Globe Santa does not process duplicate requests
      • All letters need to be countersigned by designated MGH staff. Elizabeth Thompson and Mary Barber are the counter signers for our Department. Each family letter must be attached to a Globe Santa Verification Form. The Globe Santa verification form must be completed and signed by the authorized representative of the registered agency for each family, attached to the family's written letter explaining their circumstances and sent to Globe Santa by the deadline.
      • Letters need to be received at the Boston Globe. Be sure to get letters to Mary and/or Elizabeth to ensure they meet the deadline. Globe Santa letters will be signed, stamped and mailed to the Boston Globe through the Social Service office in the Wang Lobby.
      • If you have any questions, feel free to contact Elizabeth Thompson (x6-2614) or Mary Barber (x3-2166).
