Tip of the Month

Did you know there are "good cause" reasons for those subject to the SNAP work requirement to maintain benefits when unable to work. Able-Bodied Adults Without Dependents ("ABAWDs") age 18 through 54 can only receive SNAP for 3 FULL months between May 1, 2025 and January 1, 2027, unless they are meeting work requirements, are exempt or have "good cause" reasons for not working temporarily. Months where the member is experiencing a good cause reason not to work, if reported and approved, should not count towards their 3 month limit. Examples of good cause:

  • TEMPORARY transportation issue - examples: car in shop, bus route shut down for a brief period
  • Family or personal emergency - death, illness or other crisis
  • Unreasonable employment -discrimination, pay below minimum wage, unsafe, excess travel time (Traveling to and from work takes over two hours, or, if your client walks, the round trip commute is over two miles - does not include the time to transport family members to school/care.)
More information: A Guide for Community Organizations see section on Good Reasons for Not Meeting the ABAWD Work Rules
